Emergency Signs

Other signs of possible emergency might include the following:

Bleeding
Bleeding from any part of the body. (nose bleed, bloody feces and or urine, traumatic hemorrhage)

Vomiting/Diarrhea
Repeated episodes, especially if the animal is lethargic or symptoms persist 24 hours or more.

Convulsions
Uncontrolled jerking or spasms lasting more than a few minutes.

Excessive Pain
Limping, crying, etc. Some animals are good actors.

Respiratory Problems
Shortness of breath, excessive coughing, fainting, or blue tinted gums (normally pink)

Some clinical signs of illness do not require emergency care but do indicate a medical exam should be scheduled during regular office hours. Some examples of such non-emergency clinical signs of illness include the following:

  • Lethargy
  • Eye problems
    Redness, discharge, squinting
  • Unexplained Weight Loss
    Over a period of weeks or months
  • Appetite Changes
    Refusing food or eating more or less than normal
  • Lumps or Bumps
    May indicate tumors or soft tissue trauma
  • Excessive Scratching
  • Drinking or Urination
    Radical changes in water consumption or urinary habits
  • Behavior
    Sudden and unexplained behavior problems
